MBBS Admission in India: Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) is one of the most preferred and professional degree in medical science. Admission to MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) programs in India is typically done through a national-level entrance exam called the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test Undergraduate (NEET UG). NEET is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) on behalf of the Ministry of Education, Government of India.

To be eligible for the NEET exam, a candidate must have completed 10+2 or equivalent with Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology, and English as compulsory subjects, and must have obtained a minimum of 50% marks (40% for reserved categories) in the qualifying exam. I) About MBBS Course and Duration:

Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) is a 5½-year undergraduate medical course. An MBBS degree is required to practice medicine, diagnose and perform surgery in India. The duration of the MBBS course is 5.5 years including a mandatory internship of 12 months. Students are required to clear the NEET exam to pursue MBBS course in medical colleges in India.

II) MBBS Eligibility Criteria and Entrance Exams:

Every year more than 18 lakh candidates compete to get a seat in a medical college in India. The first challenge facing the candidates before seeking MBBS admission is to qualify for NEET Entrance Exam. The National Testing Agency (NTA) conducts the NEET exam once a year. NEET-UG is the only one national level entrance test conducted by NTA for MBBS admission in India

III) MBBS Admission Process in India:

After clearing the NEET exam, candidates can apply to various colleges and deemed universities offering MBBS programs across India. The admission process may involve further rounds of counseling and seat allocation based on the NEET score and other eligibility criteria set by the respective institutions.

Many candidates who qualify NEET exam with low score have to struggle to get admission in government medical colleges. And the fees of private MBBS colleges or Deemed Universities are very high. Due to the high tuition fee in India, many middle class students struggle to get MBBS admission in India. The only hope of these students to get MBBS admission in India is when they clear NEET exam with good score.

The screening process of NTA (NEET exam conducting body) for MBBS admission is very strict and is completely based on the merit in NEET exam. After the declaration of NEET result, the Medical Counseling Committee (MCC) conducts the further MBBS admission process.

Medical Counseling Committee offers MBBS admission through 15% All India Quota, Deemed/Central Universities, Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC) and Employees' State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) institutions. MBBS admission to the remaining 85% state quota seats is granted by the counselling authorities of the respective state.

IV) What after qualifying NEET exam?

Once the candidates qualify the NEET exam, they will be eligible to participate in AIQ, central and state level counseling and the admission process conducted for MBBS admission. NTA will prepare the list of NEET UG qualified candidates after NEET result. To participate in the counseling and seat allotment process, students have to register on the portal of Medical Counseling Committee (MCC).

MCC will conduct NEET counseling for 15% All India Quota, Deemed/Central Universities/AFMS and ESIC Institutions. During counseling for MBBS admission, students need to register using their personal and NEET result details, pay the counseling fee and fill in their preferences of the courses and colleges in which they wish to study. Based on the choices filled by the candidates, NEET All India Rank, reservation and seat matrix, MCC will conduct the NEET UG seat allotment. Candidates who will be offered seats during the seat allotment of MBBS admission will have to report to the allotted institute.

V) State wise MBBS admissions process in India:

MBBS admission to the remaining 85% state quota seats in government colleges and all seats in private institutions will be done by the respective state authorities. The counseling for MBBS admission can be conducted in online or offline mode. During the state counseling of MBBS admission, candidates have to register, fill choices of courses and colleges and undergo document verification. Apart from state quota seats, MBBS admission to 100% seats in private colleges of the respective state will be conducted by the state authorities. Check below state wise MBBS admission process.
