NIT Durgapur

The National Institute of Technology, Durgapur, is an institute set up under the Ministry of Education, Government of India. It was formerly known as Regional Engineering College Durgapur (REC Durgapur). Established in 1960, the NIT, Durgapur, is one of the oldest technical universities in India.

NIT Durgapur, earlier known as Regional Engineering College Durgapur, was first founded under ‘The University of Burdwan’ in Burdwan in 1960. Later, the university was acclaimed as the ‘Deemed University’ in 2003, was renamed as ‘NIT Durgapur’, and started granting degrees under its name.

The premier institution is approved by UGC (Universal Grants Commission) and AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education). It became the institution that got fully funded and managed under the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India. In 2007, the institute was declared an ‘Institute of National Importance’ by the Government.

NIT Durgapur Admission Process:

For admission in undergraduate programs, the student needs to secure scores in JEE Mains (Joint Entrance Examination), along with JoSAA/CSAB (Joint Seat Allocation Authority)/(Central Seat Allocation Board) Counselling. For admission in postgraduate programs, the student needs to secure scores in GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering), along with CCMT.

The NIT Durgapur has been ranked 45th among engineering colleges by the NIRF (National Institutional Ranking Framework) 2025. It has been ranked 135 among Business and Management Studies by NIRF (National Institutional Ranking Framework) 2025.

NIT Durgapur Campus:

National Institute of Technology, Durgapur is located on Mahatma Gandhi Road, A-Zone, Durgapur, West Bengal. Its campus spans 187 acres, housing academic buildings, hostels, and recreational facilities. It is located approximately 160 kilometres northwest of Kolkata and is accessible via Durgapur Railway Station, approximately 10 kilometres away.

The premier university offers key facilities to students, including modern academic blocks, a central library, a Wi-Fi campus, separate hostels for boys and girls, sports facilities, a gym, cafeterias, a convenience store, and medical care facilities. The other facilities include a large auditorium, computer centre, air-conditioned labs, stabilised power supply, and a secure atmosphere for students.
